The annual World Dog Surfing Championships saw top canine athletes carve up waves on Saturday, delighting hundreds of spectators who gathered on a Northern California beach.
Cheers and barks filled the air as dogs showcased their skills in the water.
From nimble spaniels to powerful labs, dogs were judged on their ability to stay on their boards, the size of the waves they caught, and their overall confidence.
Now in its tenth year, the event in Pacifica, just 14 miles south of San Francisco, also serves as a fundraiser for local animal charities and includes a pet adoption drive.
Sporting colorful life vests, the surfing dogs were expertly assisted by human partners who helped them catch the perfect wave, much to the applause and cheers of the crowd.
Among the standout competitors was Rusty, a Miniature Pinscher, and his owner Sophia Sadlowski from Huntington Beach.
Sadlowski first introduced Rusty to a surfboard as a puppy for fun photos. "And then ... he didn’t want to get off," she recounted. "I walk over to the beach, and I put him on a wave, and he surfed it."
Rusty, distinctive in his green, animal-print life jacket with a shark fin and goggles, proved a fierce contender in both small-sized and tandem competitions. Sadlowski proudly shared that Rusty, now cancer-free like herself, first competed at just four months old.
"He was four months old, and he took third place. So we've been surfing since," she said. "We got hooked."
The championship featured heats for small, medium, and large dogs, with the highest scorers advancing to vie for the top prize.
The day also included tandem contests, showcasing multiple dogs or even dogs and humans sharing a single board.
The Surf Dog Competitions sponsored by TasteTV were created by TCB Cafe Publishing as the "Small Wave Surf Dog Competition" in 2006.
Its success has caused it to spawn several similar dog surfing events across the world, including many in California, Florida, Australia, and the United Kingdom.
The event helps raise money for local charities aimed at animal rescue.
