Top automaker may be about to unveil the ultimate Tesla killer

Whether it feels like it or not, 2023 is rapidly coming to a close.

We've just entered Q4, which typically includes a few exciting things consumers and analysts look for toward year's end.

Ahead of the holiday shopping season, retailers typically launch major promotions. Amazon's Prime Days, Target's Circle Week, and Walmart's Deals for Days all kick off second sales in October.

Retailers also see varying degrees of revenue boost from the holiday shopping frenzy. Airline and travel revenue also typically lifts as more folks travel during the festive time of the year. And we begin to see what 2024 will look like in terms of new products, specifically in the automotive sphere.

In the past several weeks, we've already gotten glimpses of Toyota's reimagined Land Cruiser and Land Hopper and a new naming system for some forthcoming BMW models.

And with increased competition in not just gasoline cars but also the electric-vehicle space, it's safe to assume that other impressive car models aren't too far away.

Subaru to introduce a new kind of car

One such exhibition we might soon see is from Subaru, (FUJHY) -) which is expected to release an all-new electric vehicle at the 2023 Tokyo Mobility Show in Japan later in October.

The Japanese car maker, which is especially beloved by a more environmentally focused crowd, does not currently have a particularly popular and super-selling EV on the market.

To date, its best-selling model has been the Outback, its capable all-wheel-drive SUV wagon, which has sold 122,881 units in 2023 so far.

Subaru also produces an electric vehicle, the Solterra, which was released in 2023 and starts at $44,995. It's brand new, so it's difficult to tell just how enthusiastic drivers are about it.

Still, with Subaru's reputation for both racing and tree hugging, it's only fitting that the company should come out with something sporty, capable, and conscious. And it might be just around the corner.

According to auto enthusiasts and blog scuttlebutt, Subaru may unveil a "retro-inspired EV coupe," referred to as the "Subaru Sport Mobility concept," at the Tokyo Mobility Show.

There have been no official details or comments from Subaru about it yet — just one singular image that leaves plenty to the imagination.

"Look closer into some of the concept’s details and you’ll find more corresponding elements with the XT, such as the blacked-out a-pillars and square-shaped indentations on the bonnet’s leading edge, referencing its pop-up headlights," Auto Express writes.

Plenty of car manufacturers, from Ford to BMW, have attempted to create a sporty and capable EV to outdo Tesla (TSLA) -). Still, Tesla's midsize Model Y is still the best-selling EV and the fourth best-selling car overall in 2023 at an estimated 284,500 total units sold so far.

Competition may say the sector is ripe for disruption, and with Subaru's reliability and broad following, it may be the car for the job.

The Tokyo Motor Show runs from Thursday, Oct. 26, to Sunday, Nov. 5.
