Tommy Tiernan to replace Ray D'Arcy's Saturday night RTE One slot in 2020

Tommy Tiernan is set to replace Ray D’Arcy’s Saturday night slot on RTE.

The national broadcaster is to shorten Ray's weekend run and introducing a new Saturday night prime-time slot for the funnyman starting on January 4.

RTE are also looking for a sponsor for the show. The Irish Independent reports that the station is seeking €120,000 sponsorship for the comic’s highly anticipated slot, according to the Herald.

Tommy’s new show is scheduled to run from January to March.

The comic’s chat show had an average audience of more than 300,000 over the summer which has no doubt impressed bosses at Montrose.

Tommy has previously expressed just how much he enjoys the format of his chat show.

The 50-year-old said: "The chat show is unusual in the way that it creates a space where anything can happen and I feel very lucky to be in the hands of such wonderful researchers who really are the people that put the whole thing together.

"I just turn up and talk, they’re the ones who curate it. The guests as well show a remarkable amount of generosity in agreeing to do it with me because its a conversation without a safety net."

Executive producer  Justin Healy added: "Tommy has a way of connecting with people instantly, a skill which is a joy to watch.

"To have a host completely in the dark as to who is going to walk on to the set is a gamble that only Tommy could pull off.

"From internationally known stars to lesser known faces, Tommy gets them to reveal an awful lot of themselves which at times is compelling and at times uncomfortable, but always engaging."

Ray who has been presenting his hugely successful chat show since 2015 is due to finish up in late December as part of RTE ’s recent reshuffle, RSVP Live reports.

He is the second highest-paid broadcaster in RTE after Ryan Tubridy , netting a salary of €450,000 a year.
