Tommy Robinson begs Donald Trump to grant him asylum after contempt conviction

Tommy Robinson has begged Donald Trump to grant him asylum as he faces up to a jail term for contempt of court.

The far-right extremist will be sentenced on Thursday after judges ruled he interfered with the course of justice by broadcasting on Facebook Live outside an ongoing court case involving child grooming.

Ahead of the sentencing Robinson, real name Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, appeared on the InfoWars conspiracy channel.

He said: "I beg Donald Trump, I beg the American government, to look at my case.

"I need evacuation from this country because dark forces are at work."

Robinson claimed that he would be killed if he is jailed, alleging that British prisons are "controlled by jihadi gangs". There is no evidence this is the case.

He added: "This is a direct appeal on behalf of my family – we love the United States, I have no future here [in Britain].

"The country has fallen."

Robinson accused the British government of trying to "silence him".

In 2013 the EDL founder was jailed for 10 months for using someone else's passport to travel to the USA.

He entered the US illegally then used his own passport to return to the UK.

The trial which Robinson broadcast outside of was subject to strict reporting restrictions in order to allow the defendants in linked cases a fair hearing.

Last week High Court judges found the 36-year-old had broken a reporting restriction on grooming trials at Leeds Crown Court in May 2018.

Judges ruled that Robinson also interfered with the course of justice by "aggressively confronting and filming" some of the defendants and said his Facebook live "gave rise to a substantial risk that the course of justice in that case would be seriously impeded".

"In our judgment, the respondent’s conduct in each of those respects amounted to a serious interference with the administration of justice," said Dame Victoria Sharp.

Robinson, who previously suggested he would appeal the ruling, will be sentenced at the Old Bailey in London on Thursday morning.

Today InfoWars host Alex Jones claimed that Mr Trump “would be watching” and vowed to send a video of Robinson’s appeal to the White House.

Mr Jones is being sued by the families of Sandy Hook victims after he repeatedly said the shooting did not happen and was a 'false flag'.

He has since acknowledged the shooting was real. A proposed trial date is set for November 2020.
