Tom Daley and husband Dustin Lance Black welcome second son Phoenix via surrogate

Olympic diver Tom Daley, 28, and his husband Dustin Lance Black, 48, have welcomed their second child together.

The couple have surprised many as they announced the birth of their second son, Phoenix Rose, in a brief announcement printed in the Times newspaper on Wednesday.

The announcement read: “Black-Daley on 28th March to Thomas Robert Daley and Dustin Lance Black, a son, Phoenix Rose.”

The Standard has contacted Daley’s representative for further comment.

The athlete and his Oscar-winning other half shared their surprise baby news, having not previously revealed that they were expecting again.

The pair are already parents to four-year-old son Robert Ray, who was named after the diver’s late father.

Notably the couple, who married in 2017, announced Robert’s birth the same way back in June 2018 via the newspaper.

At the time, the couple had revealed they were expecting a child through a surrogate in February of that same year.

After their newspaper announcement, the three-time World Champion diver shared an Instagram post, a photograph showing Robert’s feet, and said: “27/06/18. Welcome to the world our precious little Robbie Ray Black-Daley.

“The most magical moment of my life. The amount of love and joy you have brought into our life is immeasurable. Our precious son.”

Black tweeted a black-and-white photograph of them holding the baby, hands intertwined, and wrote: “Welcome to the world little Robbie Ray. Thank you for bringing so much love and light with you.

“And thank you to those who helped make our dream of having a family into this wonderful reality.”

Daley previously revealed that he and Lance were drawn to surrogacy when they decided to have a child as they wanted to continue their family lineage.

The Olympian, whose father Rob Daley died in 2011 at the age of 40, said he wanted to pass on “the people we’d lost” to their offspring.

Speaking to Giovanna Fletcher on her Happy Mum Happy Baby podcast last May, Daley said: “Lance and I […] had lost so many people in our families and there was something about surrogacy that we were drawn to that just meant that we could pass on the people that we’d lost, their genes and their thoughts, their feelings, their personalities and being able to bring someone into the world, that felt so extremely special.”
