When it comes to Boston sports icons, it doesn’t get any bigger than Tom Brady. And that status as Boston’s preeminent sports star has decent crossover value into the world of Boston’s homegrown celebrities like Ben Affleck, Matt Damon and Mark Wahlberg. That could be — at least temporarily — coming to an end with Brady’s impending free agency.
But just because Brady hits a golf course with Affleck, it doesn’t mean that the longtime Patriots quarterback is willing to give up any hints about his future NFL plans.
Affleck did his media rounds with ESPN on Tuesday to promote his upcoming film, The Way Back, and while speaking on set with Get Up, Affleck revealed that he and Damon tried to get the inside scoop on Brady’s free agency.
Brady wasn’t exactly helpful.
Affleck said:
“Me and Matt texted him, ‘What’s the deal? You going or you staying?’ And this is what we got back … an emoji.”
It was the shrug emoji …
I must say that part of me appreciates that Brady responded to a question about a life-altering — and frankly, league-changing — decision with a single shrug emoji. He could have ignored the text, but the emoji response is the playfulness we have come to expect from Brady’s digital presence.
Good effort, though, Ben and Matt. It couldn’t hurt to ask.
