Tokyo Olympics: Team GB sailors Hannah Mills and Eilidh McIntyre win 470 gold

Hannah Mills has become the most successful female Olympic sailor of all-time after she and partner Eilidh McIntyre took gold in the women’s 470 class.

Mills, who was one of Team GB’s flag bearers at the opening ceremony, won silver at London 2012 and gold in Rio alongside Saskia Clark.

Mills and McIntyre teamed up when Clark retired after the 2016 Games, claiming the world title together on the waters of Enoshima two years ago and they repeated that success at the same venue by finishing fifth in Wednesday’s medal race, which was won by Switzerland.

The pair took a 14-point lead into the finale after a superb run of performances throughout the regatta, finishing inside the top four of all but two of the previous ten races.

With double points on offer, the French pair of Camille Lecointre and Aloise Retornaz still had hope of closing the gap but they could only finish sixth and were edged for bronze by Poland, who finished fourth, on a tie-breaker.
