
Tokyo confirmed 3,081 new cases of novel coronavirus infection on Sunday, down 1,311 from the same day in the previous week.
The daily tally in the capital was lower than the figure logged on the same day a week earlier for the seventh consecutive day.
According to the Tokyo metropolitan government, the number of seriously ill COVID-19 patients fell by one from Saturday to 296. The seven-day moving average of new cases was 3,784, down 20% from 4,733 in the preceding seven-day period.
The Health, Labor and Welfare Ministry said the number of people with serious COVID-19 symptoms nationwide climbed by 10 from the previous day to 2,070 at the start of Sunday, hitting a record high for the 17th day in a row.
In Osaka Prefecture, there were 2,389 new cases reported Sunday, up 168 from the same day last week. The figure was the prefecture's highest so far for a Sunday.
Two deaths were also confirmed in Osaka Prefecture.
