Major supermarkets have eased product limits on items such as toilet paper after a slowdown in panic buying seen in stores.

Supermarket giant Woolworths announced its limits on toilet paper and rice have been eased to one item per shop to four from Wednesday.

Hand sanitiser has been eased from a two-per customer limit to four per customer.

Product limits on pasta, frozen vegetables, tissues, baby wipes, baked beans and canned spaghetti, paper towels and disposable gloves have been removed entirely.

Meanwhile, Coles said customers could buy as many packs of toilet paper and paper towels as they wanted after restrictions were eased on Tuesday.

Despite the roll back in restrictions, product limits are still in effect for some items.

Woolworths have said a two-product limit applied for eggs, flour, sugar, pasta sauce, handwash, cleaners and disinfectants.

The supermarket's managing director, Claire Peters, said product availability at stores was improving.

"While product availability is getting better and better each day, it will take some time for us to get back to full supply," she said.

"Customers may still notice certain products in shorter supply from time to time as we continue to adjust our operations to this 'new normal'."

At Coles, a two items per customer limit still applies to pasta, flour, dry rice, eggs, frozen vegetables, frozen desserts, sugar, tinned tomatoes, liquid soap and anti-bacterial wipes.

The supermarket chain said some additional limits on other items could be introduced at individual stores, depending on demand.

Product limits remain relatively unchanged at Aldi.

A limit of one pack of toilet paper is still in effect, along with a two product limit on paper towels, tissues, pasta, flour, rice, hand sanitiser, eggs and liquid soap.
