Toddler rushed to intensive care with COVID-19 in Ireland

A toddler under the age of 4 was rushed to intensive care in an Irish hospital with coronavirus, it has emerged.

The incident was notified to the Health Protection Surveillance Centre last Friday.

The exact age, gender and location of the patient has not been released by health officials.

Their current condition is also not known.

The youngster is the second child under the age of 4 to be admitted to intensive care with the virus here.

And it brings to six the number of children under the age of 14 who have been treated in ICU for coronavirus in Irish hospitals.

Statistics released by the HPSC today also show a further six young people under the age of 24 have been hospitalised with the killer bug since the last update on Friday.

However older people continue make up the vast majority of both hospitalisations and deaths from coronavirus here.

A total of 895 people over the age of 65 have sadly passed away with COVID-19 since the outbreak began in Ireland.

While last night a further 306 coronavirus cases were confirmed in the country, with one more death announced. It brings the total number of COVID-19 infections in Ireland to 72,544.
