A child has been taken to hospital after a car crashed into a childcare centre in Melbourne's north.

The vehicle smashed through the front windows of the Broadmeadows shopfront and ended up inside the building about 9am on Friday.

A police spokesman said the young child inside at the time was lucky to escape serious injury and has been taken to hospital for observation.

Police said it appeared a woman was attempting to park her car when the crash occurred.

She suffered minor injuries and was taken to hospital for treatment.

Debris was scattered across the strip of shops after the crash.
