Toddler dies, second child in hospital after shed fire in northern Tasmania

A young boy has died in a shed fire at Mowbray, near Launceston, in northern Tasmania.

Police and emergency services were called to the fire on Verdun Street shortly after 1:30pm, where the shed was fully alight.

Police said the three-year-old boy was found dead and a four-year-old boy was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

The mother of the three year old was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Inspector Nathan Johnston said the children knew each other but were not siblings.

There were other people at the home and it is believed the toddlers were in the shed.

"They're distraught understandably," Inspector Johnston said.

"It's a tragic set of circumstances [and] we don't know the full story at this point, but it appears to be a tragedy."

Police have been doorknocking in the area.

The cause of the fire will be investigated and a report prepared for the coroner.
