Todd Boehly can complete failed Chelsea deadline day £43m transfer in January amid decision

Todd Boehly can complete the failed Deadline Day transfer of Edson Alvarez from Ajax in January with Chelsea set to reignite talks.

Alvarez is said to still be keen on a move to Stamford Bridge despite Ajax refusing to let the Mexican leave on Deadline Day. football.london understands that Edson Alvarez was the subject of a £43m bid from Chelsea after tracking the 24-year-old throughout the summer transfer window.

Chelsea turned their focus to securing a loan deal for Juventus midfielder Denis Zakaria after failing to get a deal for Alvarez over the line before the transfer window shut. The Mexico international took drastic measures by refusing to report for first team training, similar to Antony before he sealed a £85million move to Manchester United, but will now need to wait until January to see if the Blues come back in for him.

Dutch journalist Mike Verwejj has since revealed on the Kick Off Football podcast that Alvarez only wants a transfer to Chelsea, with talks set to continue between the Blues and Eredivisie champions 'in the coming days'.

Verwejj said: "Now he just wants to make that transfer to Chelsea. If there is a club that has 50million for you and wants to give you €10million net per year, he really wanted to go. He was quite broken."

Thomas Tuchel was keen to add a new midfielder to his squad with Chelsea having pursued a deal to sign Barcelona's Frenkie de Jong. Injuries to the likes of N'Golo Kante and Mateo Kovacic left the Blues with minimal options in midfield, but a deal for De Jong proved too difficult.

"A winter transfer is one of the possibilities. In the coming days, that will be discussed with Chelsea," Verwejj continued when discussing Alvarez's future. Since Zakaria's move to Chelsea is just a season-long loan deal, and with a busy second half to the season expected after the 2022 World Cup, the Blues may return to secure a deal for the Mexican to add further depth to an injury prone area of the squad, especially with deals for Kante and Jorginho running out next summer.
