CHICAGO _ High winds, snow, rain and temperatures in the 30s postponed Sunday's Cubs-Angels series finale at Wrigley Field.
A makeup date has not been announced.
The forecast on WLS-Ch. 7 summed it up in one word: Gross.
Scheduling a makeup date would be more difficult than usual because of a lack of shared off days.
Both teams are off on April 29, but the Cubs are on a western road trip that would force them to go from Phoenix to Chicago for one day before flying to Seattle for a two-game series against the Mariners. The only other off-day that makes sense would be Aug. 26, a team source said. The Cubs would be home, but the Angels would be going from Houston to Chicago for one day before flying home to Anaheim.
This is one reason why MLB shouldn't schedule interleague games in April in cold weather cities.
"Sometimes people ask me what's the hardest part of working in baseball," Cubs president Theo Epstein said at the Cubs Convention. "I always say 'the rain.' It is so hard. It's a number of people involved. Maybe a half-dozen people, trying to make those kinds of decisions, factoring in the integrity of the game and logistics and of course the fans and their experience.
"We used to call it the brain trust. And we've had so many difficult outcomes, now we call it the rain trust."
The Cubs' "rain trust" came to a decision before fans ventured out to the ballpark.
The park is closed to media and fans. The players will arrive later for the flight to Miami.
Angels manager Brad Ausmus, who celebrates his 50th birthday Sunday, said Saturday he was hoping they would postpone the game, adding it had "nothing to do with my birthday." Ausmus envisioned spending "the entire day playing cards, waiting for them to restart the game."
The Cubs travel to Miami for a three-game series, while the Angels begin a three-game series at Texas on Monday.
No rotation has yet been announced for the Cubs-Marlins series.
Tyler Chatwood was prepared to pitch in the miserable weather, which he admitted is worse than pitching in Denver.
"It's cold here, man," he said. "That wind makes it very cold. I think the other night was one of the coldest nights I've pitched in. You just want to get quick outs because you don't want your guys standing out there in the cold too long."
With the postponement, manager Joe Maddon can skip Chatwood and go with Yu Darvish on regular rest Monday in Miami.
"There are ways we don't have to start him if in fact he doesn't have to start if the weather is bad (Sunday)," Maddon said Saturday. "We've discussed both possibilities but haven't concluded anything yet."
With upcoming off days next Thursday and April 22, the Cubs will go with a four-man rotation through April 27, or whenever Lester returns.
The Cubs finished their first homestand with a 3-2 record and reside in last-place in the NL Central.
