Georges St-Pierre did everything he could to finish Dan Hardy, but the tough Brit just wouldn’t quit.
Exactly a decade ago on March 27, 2010, then-welterweight champion St-Pierre (26-2 MMA, 20-2 UFC) faced Hardy in the UFC 111 headliner looking to notch his fourth straight title defense.
It took St-Pierre less than 30 seconds to land a takedown, which was the story of the fight for all five rounds. St-Pierre was able to easily control Hardy on the ground, threatening with numerous submissions and transitioning from mount to the back.
With 20 seconds left in Round 1, St-Pierre sank in a deep armbar that had Hardy visibly agonizing in pain. But “The Outlaw” refused to tap and eventually got out of the submission with a big smile on his face.
Unfortunately for Hardy though, he wasn’t able to mount much offense. St-Pierre repeatedly took the fight to the mat and took Hardy’s back on numerous occasions. It was a dominant decision win for St-Pierre, but Hardy won the MMA community’s respect for hanging tough and refusing to give up.
The currently retired St-Pierre never lost after that. He won his next six in a row and won the UFC middleweight title after a layoff of nearly four years in 2017 when he took out Michael Bisping at UFC 217 to add another title to his already incredible resume.
