Jewellery plays an important role in our lives and is one of the most cherished accessories capable of making one feel unique, confident, and beautiful. Over a period of time, jewellery pieces often tend to tarnish or become dull due to being alloyed with other metals, or the weather conditions and mainly due to the chemicals they are exposed to which are present in products of daily use like perfumes, soaps, lotion, and other cosmetics that tend to damage the surface of jewellery pieces. Due to this, we need to ensure that we wear the jewellery at the end once we are done dressing up and using certain products that could be harmful.
Exposure to excess heat and the sun’s rays can fracture certain gems, removing the natural moisture the gems require to maintain their beauty. Thus, affecting their durability and colour. We need to understand how to care for our treasured jewellery to maintain its lustre and beauty hence we got in touch with Sheetal Ranka of Rare Jewels- A Ranka Legacy to share some valuable tips on how to keep the jewellery shiny forever.
Sheetal shared some ideas on how to clean and maintain your jewellery or gems at home as the monsoon season has also settled in and the moisture will affect the shine and sustainability of the gemstones.
Getting your gold jewellery cleaned professionally at least once every year from your jeweller is the most effective way to maintain them as they have an understanding of gold, different gem materials, and what method works the best to clean the piece.
An economical and safe way of cleaning your gems at home is to soak your jewellery in a bowl with warm water mixed with a mild soap (avoid detergents). Use a soft toothbrush and slowly scrub your pieces to clean them out and then dry using a soft clean lint-free cloth.
A common mistake made by us quite regularly is that we tend to keep two different types of jewellery in one box, a habit that tends to damage the pieces often. Separating your jewellery and storing them in different boxes is a necessity. One of the easiest ways to prevent your jewellery from getting spoiled is to safely store them in some airtight boxes, making sure they are completely dry before putting them in the boxes rather than just tossing them in some drawer. Nowadays, airtight containers and zip lock pouches are easily available in the market which can also be used to keep the jewellery moisture-free and also prevents the ornaments from breaking.
You can also keep Silica pouches along with the jewellery as they absorb moisture and help keep the stones dry or use an anti- tarnish paper to maintain the shine. If you are traveling, we recommend protecting your jewellery from scratches and further damage by packing it up well in a case with extra padding.
