Tinley Park fire injures 2, including firefighter who slipped on ice

Jan. 09--Two people including a firefighter who slipped on ice were injured during a Tinley Park house fire fought in frigid conditions Thursday afternoon, officials said.

Firefighters were called to the 16000 block of Fairfax Lane in Tinley Park about 12:45 p.m., said Assistant Fire Chief Kris Dunn.

As they arrived, firefighters saw "heavy fire" coming from the first floor and attached garage of the residence, Dunn said.

No one was in the house, Dunn said. Two people were injured, including the firefighter who slipped on the ice. Both were treated at the scene, Dunn said. Details about the second injury were not available.

On the way to the fire, firefighters received a call that there could be someone trapped inside but that turned out not to be the case, Dunn said.

Tree branches in front of the building froze over with what looked like giant snowflake earrings as firefighters battled the blaze. One man who stopped briefly to watch from the sidewalk had a small icicle hanging off the tip of his nose.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, but Dunn said, foul play was not suspected.

A dozen departments aided the village in responding to the fire, Dunn said, either at the scene or by helping man the town's fire stations in the meantime.

Dunn praised the firefighters' response.

"I just thought everybody did a great job," Dunn said.
