Timo Werner opens door to Liverpool summer transfer after RB Leipzig's victory over Tottenham

Timo Werner has admitted that he is flattered with the speculation linking him with a potential move to Liverpool.

The RB Leipzig striker was reportedly a target for a number of Premier League clubs in the January transfer window, including Chelsea and Jurgen Klopp's side.

In the end, Werner stayed at the Red Bull Arena but German newspaper Bild report that a deal for the Germany striker's release clause with the Bundesliga side is set to expire at the end of April.

The release clause allows a prospective buyer to secure him for between €55milion and €60milion, depending on Leipzig’s final league position - but time is running out.

From the end of April, Leipzig can demand whatever price they feel is necessary for the 23-year-old, which is likely to be an astronomical figure given his form this season.

Werner continued his scoring record by netting the only goal of the game, as Julian Nagelsmann's side beat Tottenham 1-0 in the first leg of their last-16 Champions League tie.

The visitors were awarded a second half penalty after Ben Davies upended Konrad Laimer in the box, and Werner made no mistake from the spot.

Speaking to ViasportFotball after the game, Werner was asked about the transfer speculation linking him with a summer move to Anfield.

“Liverpool are the best team in the world at the moment, and when you're linked with them, it makes me very proud," he said.

"It's a pleasure, but I know Liverpool have a lot of good players. I have to improve myself and to learn much more things to get on this level and to play there."

Werner is Leipzig's leading scorer this season with his winner against Spurs his 26th goal across all competitions.
