Timo Werner back at Chelsea training in boost for Frank Lampard ahead of Newcastle

Chelsea fans were a little concerned when they didn't see Timo Werner at training on Thursday ahead of the Premier League clash at Newcastle United on Saturday.

However, Blues supporters can breathe a sigh of relief as the German forward was back with the rest of the first team on Friday.

The 24-year-old was with his country during the international break, scoring a brace against Ukraine and then being part of the side which was hammered 6-0 by Spain.

Werner has really hit his stride at the Blues, having scored five times in his last four appearances with the club in a hot run of form.

Frank Lampard admitted that Chelsea were waiting on the return of coronavirus test results before some players were able to return to training.

The Premier League announced that 16 players across the league had tested positive for the virus, something that Lampard admits is obviously an issue.

"I think it is a concern but it is also a concern in modern life," Lampard said on Thursday in his press conference.

"I think now we are in lockdown but before that, schools went back and life was resuming with a sense of normality but not quite and we have seen it in our world where cases are starting to go up again.

"I don’t see why football should be any different. Maybe 16 is not a huge number considering the amount of people that are being tested, we are trying to keep our bubbles as strict as we can, we have done all along since the restart so lets hope those numbers don’t continue to go up."

Lampard is expected to be without Thiago Silva and Kai Havertz for the match at St James' Park, while Christian Pulisic is also out as he recovers from a hamstring injury.
