Timeline: The three year wait for answers in the Cameron House blaze which killed two guests


More than three years have gone by between the fatal blaze at Cameron House and the investigation reaching the courtroom.

The families of the victims and the survivors had both urged the authorities to take action in a bid to get answers.

Their wait finally ended today (Friday) as Cameron House bosses admitted safety failings in court which caused the inferno.

6.40am - fire alarm sounds at Cameron House.

6.50am - firefighters arrive at scene.

8am - it’s discovered victims Richard Dyson and Simon Midgley were missing following evacuation.

April 2018 - scene examiners finally begin combing through hotel remains following work to make structure safe.

December 2018 - West Dunbartonshire MP Martin Docherty-Hughes called on Crown Office to shed light on progress of inquiry.

January 2019 - in a letter to Dumbarton MSP Jackie Baillie, Lord Advocate James Wolffe QC said final investigation reports have yet to be received. He states no “future proceedings” can be taken until their completion.

October 2019 - Lord Advocate admits he can’t put timescale on when investigation will be completed.

November 2019 - fire chiefs and police complete their probe into blaze.

January 2020 - major work underway to restore Cameron House in reopening plan.

February 2020 - Ms Baillie sends another letter to Lord Advocate, calling for answers over the fire. She said lengthy delay is causing distress for victims’ families.

August 2020 - First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said she will meet Simon’s mum, Jane Midgley, as she fights for answers 1000 days since the tragedy.

October 2020 - blaze survivor Hannah Munn told of her torment at waiting almost three years without no news of what caused it.

December 2020 - hotel launches recruitment drive as it plans to reopen in April.

January 2021 - Cameron House pled guilty at Dumbarton Sheriff Court to charges of failing to take fire safety measures.
