Tim Peake's descent module parachute among exhibits spruced up as Science Museum prepares to reopen

The Science Museum was putting the final touches to displays today as it prepared to become the latest London attraction to reopen.

One conservator was seen cleaning Major Tim Peake’s Soyuz descent module parachute ahead of the museum’s reopening on Wednesday. It was used by the British astronaut at the end of his 2015 mission to the International Space Station.

Other items being spruced up include a display of bicycles through time, below, a BESM-6 Supercomputer and an aerial tuning inductor from the Rugby Radio Station.

The director of the Science Museum Group, Sir Ian Blatchford, said: “After four months of closure we cannot wait to open our doors, safely welcome back visitors and ignite their curiosity again.”

This autumn, the museum will host the touring exhibition Brass, Steel and Fire, an exploration of the locomotive, and a commemoration of the Hubble Space Telescope’s 30th anniversary.

The museum will open at 10am on Wednesday. Visitors must book a free slot to ensure social distancing. The Natural History Museum and the V&A have already reopened.
