TikTok to start paying users if filters and effects they create on the app go viral

TikTok creators will be paid for creating filters and effects on the platform should they prove wildly popular. The social media giant announced that is has created a $6 million (£4.8 million) fund known as TikTok's Effect Creator Rewards.

This programme aims to provide financial rewards to users in specific regions who create "high-performing effects" on the platform. TikTok said in a blog post that payment will be paid based on engagement.

A statement reads: "The $6 million dollar fund, available to creators in select regions, will offer payments to creators based on the community's engagement with their effects.

"At launch, for every effect that's used in 500K unique videos within 90 days of being published, a creator will collect $700 (£561). For every 100K videos published thereafter within the same 90 days, creators will collect an additional $140 (£112)."

To apply for the fund, creators must be "18 years or older and have at least 500K published TikTok videos using their effect."

Last year, TikTok introduced Effect House, an augmented reality tool enabling users to make, publish, and share captivating effects on the platform. This tool has been hailed by TikTok as having: "An enormous impact...as their innovative effects have sparked trends, shaped culture, and inspired people to create content that brings joy to our global community."

TikTok is immensely popular and the average Gen Z in the US is estimated to spend around one hour and 20 minutes on TikTok each day - a Hootsuite study found. That's well over a full day of TikTok usage per month.

However, this isn't the first fund the platform has launched. In a July 2020, TikTok introduced its $200 million Creator Fund, which is scheduled to grow to $1billion in the US in the next three years. But since then, creators have complained of being underpaid.

When this was revealed by high profile content creators on the app in 2022, YouTube and TikTok star Hank Green said: "Literally, when TikTok becomes more successful, TikTokers become less successful."
