Maurice Rioli Jnr has been dropped for Richmond's AFL clash with Hawthorn despite interim coach Andrew McQualter putting a positive spin on the small forward's refusal to take a phone call from coaching staff.
Rioli sat slumped on the bench after being substituted off during the fourth quarter of last Sunday's win over West Coast when Tigers staff members twice attempted to hand him the phone that has a direct line to the coaching box.
The 20-year-old, who tallied just six disposals for the match, glared straight ahead in frustration before snubbing the phone with a wave of his hand.
McQualter said he and Rioli caught up for coffee on Monday to discuss the incident.
"He's a young kid trying to make his way. I understand that he was disappointed," McQualter told reporters on Thursday.
"We spoke the next day and he apologised. He said his behaviour on the bench, he could've done it better.
"But we move on, it's not a big deal."
McQualter said the incident displayed Rioli's competitive streak.
"Everyone loved that; the fact the he cared and he's passionate and wants to do well for our team," McQualter said.
"You've got to love that part of him."
Rioli has played eight games this season for a career total of 25 but is yet to lock down a regular spot in the senior side.
Richmond, who sit half a game outside the top eight, face a vital match against Hawthorn at the MCG on Saturday as the battle for finals spots heats up.
McQualter is pleased to have Dustin Martin available for the contest after the superstar avoided suspension for striking West Coast's Alex Witherden.
Martin, given a $3000 fine over the incident, kicked two goals from 23 disposals against the Eagles.
"Dustin's been in a great patch of form," McQualter said, "so we're always happy to have him playing."
