Tigers find some offense, but lose fourth straight, 6-3 to Pirates

PITTSBURGH _ The Detroit Tigers scored three runs in the sixth inning. But that offensive outburst only cut their deficit in half.

The Tigers went on to lose, 6-3, to the Pirates Tuesday at PNC Park.

The Tigers' losing streak is now four and they finished 4-5 on a nine-game road trip.

The Tigers lost, 3-0, on Monday night and had no runs and three hits over the first 14 innings in Pittsburgh. By the time they scored their first run of the two-game series, they were already in a 6-0 hole.

Left-hander Matt Boyd gave up six runs (five earned) on nine hits over four-plus innings. He walked one and struck out five.

Third base prospect Jeimer Candelario pinch-hit for pitcher Edward Mujica to lead off the sixth and singled to right in his first at-bat. Ian Kinsler followed with a single to left and Jim Adduci hit an RBI double to left. Kinsler scored on a wild pitch and Miguel Cabrera brought home Adduci with a sacrifice fly to right.

Candelario finished the game at third base for Nick Castellanos, who made a fielding error that led to a run in the fifth.

The Pirates scored one run in the third, three in the fourth and two more in the fifth.

Jordy Mercer hit a leadoff double and scored on a two-out single to right by Startling Marte in the third inning.

Andrew McCutchen led off the fourth with home run to center. With the bases loaded and two outs, Boyd gave up a two-run single to fellow pitcher Chad Kuhl.

The Pirates took a 6-0 lead in the fifth after an RBI single by David Freese and a sac fly to right by Jordy Mercer that scored McCutchen.

Mikie Mahtook had hits in each of his first two at-bats and finished 2 for 3.

Miguel Cabrera finished 0 for 3 with a RBI and batted .154 (4 for 26) for the road trip.

The Pirates and Tigers will play a two-game series starting Wednesday night to complete the home-and-home interleague series.
