Tiger King star Joe Exotic's ex-husband is a convicted pedophile in prison for gun murder

Joe Exotic, the star of Netflix's Tiger King series, was once married to a convicted paedophile who is now in prison for murder.

He fell for Jeffrey Charles 'JC' Hartpence in 1991, years before he was convicted of his crimes.

Born Joe Schreibvogel, Exotic is currently serving 22 years in jail for paying a hitman to kill Carole Baskin, and of killing tigers to make room for more cats in his zoo.

When he met Hartpence Joe was still grieving the death of his first husband Brian Rhyne, who died of complications related to HIV.

The relationship came to an end when Hartpence held a gun to Joe's head in a drunken rage, New York Magazine reported.

Years after their split Hartpence was convicted for "aggravated indecent liberties with a child under the age of 14" and was put on the sex offenders register.

He is now serving a life sentence in a Kansas prison for the first degree felony murder of Curtis Shelton, who was found dead in his home with multiple gunshot wounds in 2014.

Hartpence won't be eligible for parole until 2034.

Joe marries John Finlay and Travis Maldonado (Netflix)

After they split Joe began dating John Finley, who starred in Tiger King with him.

The couple then married Travis Maldonado in a three person wedding.

The series documenting the events that lead to Joe's imprisonment has become a huge hit for Netflix.

Joe has now filed a $94million (£76million) lawsuit as he claims he was "wrongfully" arrested and imprisoned.

According to TMZ, Joe alleged he was "discriminated against because he is the only person charged with this statute because [he] is an openly gay male with the largest collection of generic tigers and crossbreeds."

According to the suit, Joe demanded $78,840,000 for the loss of his personal property.

What's more, he insisted on seeking an additional $15 million after he accused another former colleague of being an informant before saying his mother Shirley's death is as a result of his imprisonment.
