The debate over which team deserves the title of the greatest Dota 2 roster to never lift the Aegis continues to fuel passionate conversations among fans.
Legendary squads like Team Secret’s TI5 lineup and PSG.LGD’s unforgettable TI8 roster sits at the center of these discussions, embodying the heartbreak of near misses and the “what if” moments that define the game’s history. These teams had the talent, strategy, and consistency to win it all, yet in the decisive moments, they fell short.
Team Secret are often the first name mentioned in this debate. For years, they have been regarded as one of the biggest names in Dota 2, boasting rosters that have always included icons. Despite multiple deep runs at The International, they have never secured the Aegis, and one of their most upsetting runs was at TI5. Featuring one of the strongest rosters in the history of Dota 2 esports, with the likes of Arteezy, Puppey, s4, KuroKy, and zai, the team could only manage a 7/8th place finish.

However, their closest moment came in 2022 at TI11, when they reached the grand final before falling to Tundra Esports. Secret also claimed third at TI10 and fourth at TI9, cementing their reputation as consistent contenders whose ultimate breakthrough never arrived.
PSG.LGD also have a similar story. Formed in 2009 and recognized as one of the first teams in China to establish elite Dota rosters, LGD have featured nearly all of China’s biggest Dota 2 stars, including Ame, Maybe, fy, and xiao8.
However, their track record is filled with near misses: second place at TI8 and TI10, third at TI5 and TI9, and fourth at TI7. Despite winning countless other tournaments, LGD have won almost everything except The International, making their drought one of the most heartbreaking in the scene.
Virtus.Pro also built an era of dominance in Eastern Europe without ever converting it at TI. With players like RAMZESS666 and No[o]ne, they achieved four separate 5th-6th place finishes at TIs from 2015 to 2021, consistently performing well but never breaking through to the final stages.
More recently, Gaimin Gladiators experienced their own heartbreak after dominating the 2023 season, entering TI12 as the favorite, only to lose the grand final to Team Spirit. At TI13, history repeated itself as they fell short again, this time against Team Liquid.

What makes these stories so compelling is how they underline the unforgiving nature of The International. An entire season of dominance can collapse in a single bad series, a misunderstood meta choice, or one silly mistake. Winning TI is the ultimate benchmark of greatness in Dota 2, and while these teams never lifted the trophy, they remain celebrated as legends who pushed the game forward.
Far from being remembered as failures, these rosters live on as reminders of how thin the margins are between immortality and heartbreak. Their journeys keep the debate alive, ensuring their legacies remain part of Dota 2’s competitive history.
