Thundersnow captured near Scots town as rare phenomenon seen in video footage

This is the rare moment "thundersnow" was captured near a Scots town.

In the footage, taken near Turriff in Aberdeenshire, snow can be seen falling heavily near a home on Wednesday night. As the blizzard continues, a huge flash of light can be seen as a bolt of lightening appears in the sky.

A loud crashing of thunder can quickly be heard as the noise echoes around the hills. Thundersnow - also known as a winter thunderstorm or a "thundersnowstorm" - is a kind of thunderstorm with snow falling as the primary precipitation instead of rain. It is considered a "rare and unusual" phenomenon.

The rare sight was also spotted in nearby Peterhead as Aberdeenshire was battered with snow yesterday. The footage was taken as weather warnings were issued by the Met Office for snow and ice from Tuesday until midnight on Thursday.

Scots were warned the recent freezing temperatures are likely to continue until the end of the week with power cuts likely to hit more homes. In Shetland, thousands of households were left without electricity after heavy snowfall hit the region, with SSEN warning that power may not be fully restored for another couple of days.

Elsewhere, a bone-chilling temperature of -17.5 degrees was recorded in Braemar, Aberdeenshire on Tuesday - making it the coldest place in the whole of the UK for the second day in a row. Flights departing from Aberdeen Airport also faced cancellations, bringing more disruption to travellers.

Meanwhile a road trip to the north east of Scotland by two Spanish friends came to an abrupt end when their van broke down in the Cairngorms. Manuel Gutierrez, 35, and Beatriz Castejon, 30 started their venture along the east coast through Stonehaven and into Aberdeen on Friday, December 9.

Braving the temperatures and treacherous road conditions, the pair - who live in Glasgow - headed towards Braemar but things turned desperate for the duo when their van broke down, leaving them stranded on the outskirts of the Aberdeenshire town.

Dangerous snow drifts in Aberdeenshire also left a gritter needing to be pulled out by a farmer's tractor after it tried to rescue a car which had also been stuck.

Local Kerry Sutherland said she was "saved" by workers from Middleton Farm after she became trapped in a snow drift on a back road from Parkhill to Newmacher to the north of Aberdeen.

And a walker was saved by Mountain Rescue volunteers after falling into freezing water at a popular Scots tourist attraction.

The 25-year-old got caught out by weather conditions at the Devil's Pulpit at Finnich Glen on Wednesday afternoon and fell from the steep gorge into the river below.
