Thug who bottled a woman in random street attack jailed for more than a year

A Coatbridge thug who hit a terrified woman over the head with a glass bottle in a random attack has been jailed.

Damion Donnelly, 38, shoved his female victim against a fence and struck her on the head with a bottle on Greenwood Crescent last November.

The Kipland Walk resident, who was labelled “no stranger” to the court by Sheriff Frank Pieri, also behaved in a threatening and abusive manner on Beechwood Drive on the same day.

After Sheriff Pieri noted it was a “shocking offence”, Donnelly’s defence solicitor said: “It was, but the report provides some context.

“He has no recollection of it but accepts what the complainer says and has asked me to apologise to her.

“His motivation to stay at liberty is that his father is in the latter stages of dementia. He’s moved in with his parents to provide care and he doesn’t want to be in prison when his father passes.

“He’s assessed as a moderate risk for reoffending and can be managed in the community.

“He’s ashamed and appalled at this shocking incident.”

Despite his solicitor’s plea for leniency, Sheriff Pieri told Donnelly: “I’ve heard everything that can be said on your behalf but the fact remains that this was an attack on a stranger.

“That comes in the context of your record; you are no stranger to this court.

“I’ll impose a sentence of 16 months in custody.”
