Thug leaves man with horrific injuries after smashing a coffee cup into his face

A man picked up a coffee cup and smashed into his victim's face after being told to stop arguing with his girlfriend.

The victim has been left with a misshapen nose, and now faces the prospect of having surgery to break the bone and reset it.

Swansea Crown Court heard Jay Parry has a long history of offending - including convictions for 17 burglaries - and has recently completed an anger management course while in prison.

Brian Simpson, prosecuting, said the assault took place in the early hours of the morning of January 10 last year at a house on Mansel Street in Swansea city centre. He said Parry and his partner were arguing in the property and when homeowner Goran Mohammed asked them to stop, the defendant turned his aggression on him.

Parry pushed his victim against the wall and punched him six or seven times in the face before grabbing a coffee cup and smashing it into his nose. The bleeding victim managed to flee the house, and in the street outside saw a police officer who happened to be in the area attending a call at a nearby house..

The court hard that when the officer went into the victim's house he saw blood splatters and broken pieces of a bloody coffee cup on the floor. The defendant was arrested, and in interview denied carrying out any assault.

Meanwhile Mr Mohammed was taken to hospital suffering with a wound to his scalp, bruises and swelling on his face, and multiple cuts to the bridge of his nose.

In an impact statement which was read to the court the victim said he had tried to reason with Parry but the defendant had gone "absolutely mad" and attacked him. He said in the aftermath of the assault he had been too scared to stay in Swansea and had spent three months living in Manchester and Hull before feeling safe enough to return to Wales. He said he was conscious of his now misshapen nose, and was facing surgery to break the bone and reset it.

Jay Anthony Paul Parry, of Gorse Avenue, Townhill, Swansea, had previously pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm (ABH) when he appeared in the dock for sentencing. He has 26 previous offences for 47 offences, including 17 burglaries. He also has a conviction for battery and one for ABH - this offence involved him throwing a bottle at a stranger's head in the street, and then threatening to stab his victim, his partner, and their dogs.

The court heard that at the time of the coffee mug assault in January 2021 the defendant was out of prison on licence. Following his arrest he was recalled back to custody to serve the remainder of a 54 month sentence imposed at Swansea Crown Court in 2018 for burglary.

Jon Tarrant, for Parry, said the defendant had a history of drug taking and was "no stranger to the courts". He said that during his last period of custody Parry had completed a number of courses - including anger management.

Judge Geraint Walters said in his view the assault had been undercharged as an ABH and should have properly been charged as a wounding - an offence which could have attracted a greater sentence. However, Judge Walters said he was bound to sentence the offence before the court.

With a one-quarter discount for his guilty plea, the judge sentenced Parry to 18 months in prison - the sentence to be served concurrently with his current recalled sentence period.
