Throwback 1988 clip shows Glasgow's legendary Coca-Cola roller coaster in action

Out of all the incredible attractions that were on offer at the Glasgow Garden Festival in 1988, few if any are as fondly recalled as the Coca-Cola Roller.

Definitely not for the faint-of-heart, this monster roller coaster twisted, looped and corkscrewed its way into the collective memory of an entire generation of Glaswegians.

Reaching speeds of up to 50mph, the legendary ride's initial drop was so intense that punters experienced acceleration forces equal to five times that of normal gravity. It really was the ultimate white knuckle ride.

Now, thanks to YouTuber mrjbroberts, those brave souls who rode the coaster back in '88 can relive the thrill and terror of the Coca-Cola Roller all over again.

The minute-long clip may be short in length, but it's unearthed memories that are nearly 35 years old and counting.

Commenting on the clip, Caity Hazel wrote: "This roller coaster was awesome! I was only 10 at the time! My cousin and my grandad got stuck at the top half way for half an hour when the mechanism jammed lol!"

Alexander Fraser commented: "Loved that roller coaster! My grandparents had a café setup at the festival so I was there a lot, I was only 8 at the time and I can remember it like yesterday!"

Tony Cassidy added: "Excellent memories, I was 16 at the time, went on this rollercoaster about 20 times."

After the conclusion of the Garden Festival, the Coca-Cola Roller was sold to the American Adventure park in Derbyshire and renamed Missile (very fitting). It was again dismantled in 2005 and moved to the Pleasurewood Hills theme park in Lowestoft, where it's now known as Wipeout and continues to be enjoyed by thrill seekers from far and wide.
