Three year groups told to isolate as positive coronavirus cases confirmed at two schools in one area of Bury

Three year groups have been sent home following positive coronavirus cases at two Bury schools.

All Year 9 students at The Heys School in Prestwich, formerly Prestwich Arts College, are being told to isolate after 'a case of Covid-19 was confirmed in the Year 9 bubble' this week.

Year 10 and Year 11 students are also currently isolating, according to Bury Council, though the town hall and school have not confirmed whether there have been confirmed cases in those year groups.

The 14-day isolation period for Year 9 students began on September 30, according to an email sent to parents seen by the Manchester Evening News.

Pupils will be able to return on October 15 according to guidance from Public Health England. In the meantime, students are being to to take part in online lessons.

The email from The Heys School, dated September 30, reads: "Dear parent/carer, we are contacting you as a case of Covid-19 has been confirmed in the Year 9 bubble, we were contacted at the end of the day by Public Health with this information.

"As per our risk assessment, and on the advice and guidance of Public Health England, we have made the decision to ask for all Year 9 students to isolate as from today for a 14-fay period, your daughter/son will be able to return to school on Thursday 15th October 2020."

The email adds an explanation of exactly how students should be isolating, saying: "Isolation means that your child should remain at home for the duration of this period.

"They should not be out in the local community, using public transport or mixing with pupils from our school or other schools."

Just a short distance away, one teacher at Our Lady of Grace Primary School has also tested positive for coronavirus, Bury Council has confirmed.

In a letter dated September 29, headteacher Alison Casey said that there 'has been a confirmed case of Covid-19 within the school' and that 'the individual is isolating'.

But no pupils or staff are being required to isolate, added Mrs Casey, after the school took advice from the Department for Education, Public Health England and Bury's Community Infection Prevention and Control Team.
