Three walkers rescued from Scots mountainside after becoming stranded in blizzard conditions

Three walkers had to be rescued from a mountainside near Crianlarich in extreme conditions at the weekend.

Volunteers from Killin Mountain Rescue Team were drafted in to assist the rescue on Saturday night.

A woman and her son, along with a second woman, had scaled Beinn a’ Chroin, but were quickly caught out by changing weather conditions.

The trio had been attempting to make their way off of the hillside when heavy snow began, making the route down treacherous.

Rescuers made their way up the slopes and located the walkers at around 8pm where they were given some medical assistance.

The cold and wet walkers were taken off the mountainside at around 3.30am and were provided with hot drinks by staff at the Crianlarich Hotel.

Bill Rose, of Killin MRT, said: “It would take you about an hour and a half to make your way down normally, but in those conditions you could double that.

“It was a very good day on Saturday when they set off, but the conditions changed very quickly. They didn’t do anything wrong. They were well prepared and equipped and called the police and asked for mountain rescue assistance as soon as they were in bother.

“I would advise that, in addition to checking the forecast before setting off, also check the what the forecast is for when you plan on heading back down too.”
