Three things government urging people to do to celebrate New Year

The health secretary has urged people to do three things if they are celebrating this New Year.

Speaking today, Sajid Javid confirmed New Year plans can still go ahead as no further coronavirus restrictions will be introduced in England before then.

However, Mr Javid urged people to "remain cautious" and said people should do three things if they are celebrating.

He said people should take lateral flow tests before going out, celebrate outside if they can and "have some ventilation if you can."

Mr Javid said: "We look at the data on a daily basis - that hasn't changed over the Christmas period.

"But there will be no further measures before the new year. Of course, people should remain cautious as we approach New Year's celebrations.

"Take a lateral flow test if that makes sense, celebrate outside if you can, have some ventilation if you can.

The health secretary has said that it is up to each of the nations in the United Kingdom to decide their own restrictions.

England reported a record number of new Covid-19 cases on December 25, latest figures have revealed.

There were a staggering 113,628 new cases on Christmas Day, as people tested ahead of mixing with friends and family.

A further 103,558 new cases on Boxing Day and 98,515 new cases on December 27.
