Three people drown in separate incidents in Uttarakhand within 24 hours

HARIDWAR: In less than 24 hours, Uttarakhand recorded three incidents in which three tourists drowned while bathing in a river. In the first incident which took place at Rishikesh, a five-year-old girl who had come from Delhi with her parents drowned in the Ganga. The girl, Ashi Sharma, was bathing at Swaminarayan ghat with her family when a strong river current swept her away, said Ritesh Saha, SHO of Muni-ki-Reti police station. Her body was not found till the time of filing this report.

In another incident that took place on Sunday morning, a 28-year-old tourist from Muzaffarnagar drowned in the Ganga. The victim, Arun Kumar, was camping at Dangu Talla village in Pauri Garhwal with his friends.

The third incident took place in Haridwar where 25-year-old Kalpesh (who goes by his first name), a pilgrim from Bhuj (Gujarat), drowned in the Ganga on Saturday evening. His body was found on Sunday. Rakendra Singh Kathait, SHO, Haridwar city police station, told TOI, “A group of pilgrims was staying in the Saptrishi area. Kalpesh drowned while bathing. His body was recovered by police divers.”
