Three men arrested after Liverpool hospital taxi explosion that left one person dead

One person was killed after a taxi exploded outside a UK hospital on Sunday morning.

Emergency services rushed to the scene following reports of a car on fire outside Liverpool's Women's Hospital at around 11am.

Merseyside Police have confirmed one person was killed and another injured when flames engulfed a taxi outside the entrance.

An update from police later confirmed that three arrests have been made.

The men, aged 29, 26, and 21, were detained in the Kensington area of the city and arrested under the Terrorism Act.

The update came after reports armed police have raided a house in south Liverpool following the car explosion.

A spokesperson for North West Counter Terrorism Unit confirmed that an armed police incident in south Liverpool is connected to the taxi explosion outside the Liverpool Women's Hospital on Sunday morning.

In a statement to the Liverpool Echo the force said: "Police activity on Rutland Avenue is connected to an earlier incident at Liverpool Women's Hospital."

Greater Manchester Police also released a statement saying: "Officers in Merseyside have made three arrests this afternoon after a car explosion outside the Women's Hospital in Liverpool.

"The men - aged 29, 26, and 21 - were detained in the Kensington area of the city and arrested under the Terrorism Act, in connection with the incident which occurred just before 11am today (Sunday 14 November).

"The passenger of the car - a man - was declared dead at the scene and is yet to be formally identified.

"The driver - also a man - was injured at the scene and remains in hospital in a stable condition.

"Detectives from Counter Terrorism Police North West continue to keep an open mind about the cause of the explosion and are working closely with colleagues at Merseyside Police as the investigation continues at pace."

It has not been declared a terrorist incident at this stage but out of caution counter terrorism police will be leading the investigation, the Mirror reports.

Liverpool Women's Hospital remains cordoned off by emergency services and is closed to all visitors.

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson said: "My thoughts are with all those affected by the awful incident in Liverpool today.

"I want to thank the emergency services for their quick response and professionalism, and the police for their ongoing work on the investigation."
