Three Cardiff schools hit by coronavirus as 86 pupils and three staff told to self-isolate

More than 80 pupils and three members of staff have been told to self-isolate after three cases of coronavirus were reported in three Cardiff schools this week.

At Creigiau Primary School, 25 pupils from Year Three and one member of staff have been advised by Public Health Wales to self-isolate for 10 days after they were identified as close contacts of one confirmed Covid-19 case there.

At Stacey Primary 24 pupils from Year Five and two members of staff have been advised to self-isolate for 10 days after they were identified as close contacts of a confirmed Covid-19 case.

A positive case of Covid-19 was also confirmed at Fitzalan High School which led to 37 pupils from Year 12 being told to self-isolate for 10 days by Public Health Wales.

Pupils aged three to seven returned to schools from February 22 while more secondary school pupils went back from March 15. Those in exam years have gone back for longer periods while other high school pupils have been offered check-in sessions.

All pupils are expected to return full time next term.

Under stricter re-opening guidance all secondary pupils are being asked to wear masks anywhere in school grounds where they can't socially distance, including in the classroom.

Voluntary twice weekly lateral flow tests are also being offered and "strongly recommended" to all pupils aged 14 and above.

Staff are also being offered the rapid lateral flow tests and are also being asked to wear masks when they cannot socially distance, including in the classroom at primary and secondary schools.

Public Health Wales has stressed that cases in schools do not mean they are places of transmission for the virus.

Education Minister Kirsty Williams has warned that infection in the community can get into schools. She has urged parents not to gather at school gates and pupils not to meet to socialise.
