Three arrested for 'possessing explosive substance' after bomb squad called to abandoned car

Three people have been arrested after a street was put on lockdown when a 'suspicious item' was found in an abandoned car.

Car Bank Street in Atherton was taped off for several hours after the device was found in a silver Audi A6 on January 2.

Police made the discovery shortly before 11am.

Specialist officers were called in for further assistance and a bomb disposal unit was also called to the scene to assess the item.

The device was then taken away to be 'forensically examined'.

Greater Manchester have not disclosed further details of what the device was.

Police have now arrested two men - aged 25 and 45 - and a 35-year-old woman on suspicion of possession of an explosive substance for an unlawful purpose.

They are being questioned by officers.

Following the discovery, a cordon was put in place and a number of homes in the area were evacuated as a precaution.

A large police presence remained in the area throughout the afternoon, with at least five police cars in attendance.

Some residents told the MEN that the car had been parked down the street for a few days.
