Threave Rovers boss admits side needs to win derby clash with St Cuthbert Wanderers

It’s do or die time for Threave Rovers on Saturday.

The Castle Douglas side are currently four points behind St Cuthbert Wanderers in the race for the South of Scotland League.

And the two sides meet at Meadow Park this weekend for a game that could go a long way to deciding who ends the season as champions.

Boss Vinnie Parker said: “I’m not being disrespectful to the other nine or 10 games we’ve got but we need to win. You need to win every game when you play for Threave, especially with it being a derby and with what’s at stake.

“It’s massive in terms of the league and it being a derby. We have one or two injuries so we played a friendly against Gretna on Tuesday so we could have a good look at a few of the young boys.”

Threave suffered a shock on Saturday when they were dumped out of the South of Scotland Challenge Cup by Upper Annandale.

Uppers led at the break thanks to a goal from Stefan Jackson before Scott Milligan levelled 10 minutes from time to force an extra half hour.

However, Joe Usher scored twice early in extra-time for Uppers and while Dan Carmichael got one back, it wasn’t enough for the hosts.

Parker said: “You can’t concede three goals in that fashion, especially one straight from a corner. Our goalkeeper has not had a save to make all game and we’ve conceded three goals. Credit to Uppers, they battled hard, have some decent players and got bodies behind the ball.

“If you lose two goals in extra-time you give yourselves a massive mountain to climb. We still had a chance in the last 15 minutes, we were battering them but the ball wouldn’t go in.”
