Threads Introduces Trending Topics Feature To US Users On App.

Threads has introduced a new feature to its users in the US by rolling out a trending topics section. The CEO of Meta announced the launch of this feature, which comes after a trial period of displaying the top topics on Threads. The company is focusing on refining the feature before expanding it to more countries and languages.

The updated version of Threads now displays five trending topics below the search bar. Meta uses AI systems to identify these trending topics based on the number of posts mentioning the subject and the level of engagement on those posts. The selected topics undergo a review process to ensure they are not misleading or repetitive.

Threads, launched by Meta in July 2023, provides a conversational platform for users to interact. Within the first week of its launch, the app attracted 100 million users, with an additional 30 million monthly active users joining since then.

Similar to X, users on Threads can share text-based posts, videos up to five minutes long, and links and photos. Users can follow creators and other users, as well as engage in discussions on shared interests.

While trending topics is a common feature on social media platforms, Threads' version is more discreet compared to X. Threads displays five trending topics under the search bar, whereas X lists up to 30 trending topics and has a dedicated section for it under the explore tab.

Instagram boss Adam Mosseri emphasized that Threads is not intended to replace X, which is known for discussions on hard news and politics. Instead, Threads aims to create a space for communities on Instagram that focus on areas like sports, music, fashion, beauty, and entertainment.

Interestingly, two out of the five trending topics on Threads were related to politics, including news about Trump suing ABC and his lawyer, Alina Habba.

While the addition of trending topics brings Threads closer to its competitors, the platform maintains its unique focus on fostering communities around diverse interests.
