Thomson Reuters closing its Nottingham office

Renowned news agency Thomson Reuters is to close its Nottingham office less than five years after moving to the city.

Thomson Reuters has confirmed that it will vacate its office at Chapel Bar, after having informed the 50 staff members based there that they would be working permanently from home in an internal memo.

The company has said that the roles of the staff currently employed at the office are not in jeopardy.

A Thomson Reuters spokesperson said: "Thomson Reuters always looks at ways to run our global business operations more efficiently, as the needs of our customers, and the way we support them, evolve.

"This approach sometimes includes changes in our real estate portfolio, to be in the best position to support our customers and employees, and to grow as a business."

The agency and financial newswire service, which has operations throughout the world, opened the office as a base for a new ‘global subediting hub’ in 2016, in a bid to “forge a more global” approach to its editorial output.

Commenting at the time, Thomson Reuters regional editor Richard Mably said: “The UK is an ideal location for a global desk for a number of reasons, including readily available talent, time zones and language.

"Establishing the desk in Nottingham will give staff a more affordable alternative to the difficulties of living in London (and other editing centres).”
