Thomas Tuchel speaks out on meeting Chelsea's new prospective owner ahead of £4.25bn deal

Thomas Tuchel insists he "does not doubt" Todd Boehly's ambition to ensure Chelsea remain successful.

Chelsea boss Tuchel has spoken for the first time about meeting the club's new prospective owner who is in the process of completing a £4.25billion takeover deal.

Former Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich won 21 trophies in 19 years and made the club one of the most successful in world football, including a Champions League and Club World Cup under Tuchel.

LA Dodgers owner Boelhy has agreed a £2.5bn takeover and pledged a further £1.75bn investment and visited Chelsea’s training ground last week to meet Tuchel and women’s boss Emma Hayes.

That has left Tuchel believing that US tycoon Boehly is ready to back the club again with a squad overhaul already needed this summer to close the gap on Liverpool and Manchester City.

Tuchel said: “He paid some money for it, so I don’t think he is keen to drop the ambition. That would be a big surprise, so no I don’t doubt this. We will share our opinion in more detail over the next weeks and I am sure he is as ambitious to build a competitive Chelsea for the highest level.”

Tuchel has made it plain that he will need reinforcements this summer but admitted the first meeting was more informal than detailed discussions about his transfer wish list. US owners are generally more about self-sustaining models than the excess of Abramovich’s reign.

Tuchel added: “We had lunch together but it was in the room where everybody was, like players and staff. He was very friendly, very open and it was a very informal meeting over lunch.

“It was like half-an-hour, 40 minutes so it was not too detailed. It was just to get a feeling and say hello, and we talked more about baseball and basketball actually. It was not the moment, we will do this next week, the next weeks.”
