Thomas Frank aims cheeky jibe at Romelu Lukaku in build-up to Brentford vs Chelsea

Brentford manager Thomas Frank has aimed a cheeky jibe at Chelsea's club-record signing Romelu Lukaku in the build-up to the Blues clash with the Bees.

Lukaku, 28, was signed in the summer from Inter Milan in a deal which totalled around £97.5million and it is believed that the Belgian is being paid in the region of £325,000-450,000 per week.

Serie A's MVP winner for the 2020/21 season was an injury doubt in the build-up to the European Champions' trip to the Brentford Community Stadium in the Premier League.

football.london understood that the striker's injury sustained in Belgium's 3-2 Nations League semi-final against France was only a minor one and Tuchel confirmed this himself in his pre-match press conference.

He said on Friday: "Rudiger is injured. Pulisic is still injured. Ziyech is a doubt, he missed the last two training sessions with a headache. Romelu is fine, doing all the training and will play tomorrow."

With all those injuries taken into account, Brentford manager Frank offered no sympathy to the visitors when quizzed about the abundance of absentees his opposition faced going into the match against his own team.

"I look at that team thinking that’s a good side," Frank stated. "I'm pretty sure Lukaku is paid more than our entire starting XI so they have enough quality."

Lukaku has so far scored four goals in all competitions since returning to the club in the summer and he nearly responded to Frank's jibe with his disallowed goal in the 22nd minute.

In the midst of the No.9's minor goal drought, left-back Ben Chilwell helped him and the rest of the team out with a wonderful strike right before half time to make it 1-0 to the Blues.

Timo Werner was the 28-year-old's striking compatriot in the 3-5-2 formation that manager Tuchel deployed for this match-up that followed the October international break.
