This Rare Ferrari Daytona SP3 Shattered an Auction Record

Auction houses sold lots of expensive cars this past weekend during Monterey Car Week. Perhaps none more surprisingly expensive than this, a one-off Ferrari Daytona SP3 that sold for $26 million at the RM Sotheby's auction. That's over 10 times the original MSRP.

It was for charity, though, with proceeds benefitting the Ferrari Foundation, a 501(c)(3) that supports education. The car also represented the last chance to buy a new SP3.

The Daytona SP3 debuted as part of Ferrari's "Icona" series in 2021, with the automaker building just 599 examples at a starting price of around $2.25 million. Essentially a LaFerrari minus the hybrid system and featuring new bodywork inspired by the P3 and P4 prototypes of the 1960s, the SP3 was immediately a huge hit with collectors, with examples trading for far above MSRP. Though not typically 10 times MSRP.

This one is a brand-new car. Ferrari made it just for this occasion, with a bespoke exposed carbon fiber and yellow livery with the Ferrari logo running the length of the car, plus a custom interior filled with prancing horse motifs.

RM Sotheby's confirmed that this is the most expensive new Ferrari ever sold at auction, and it was its biggest result from the Monterey event. The next priciest car was another Ferrari, an F40 LM that sold for a little over $11 million. A bargain, relatively speaking.

In fact, this Ferrari was the most expensive car sold at any auction this weekend. As Hagerty reports, the next most expensive car was a 1961 Ferrari 250 California Spyder Competizione that went for a bit over $25 million at the Gooding Christie's event.
