This Morning baffles fans as Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield start show in silence

This Morning had a very different start to the show on Monday morning, with its presenters sitting in silence.

Holly Willougby and Phillip Schofield opted not to introduce the programme straight away as they usually do, instead sitting quietly looking at the camera.

A phone rang as the camera panned around the studio, first showing the duo sat at their desk, then consumer editor Alice Beer quietly reading her script, therapist Emma Kenny looking at her cue cards and then back Holly and Phil.

Phil explained that the unusual start to the show was all for a good cause — getting people talking about their mental health struggles.

He said: "Good morning, welcome to your Monday This Morning.

"You may wonder what that's about — no call for help should go unanswered.

"That's why ITV this week is launching Britain Get Talking, an emergency appeal to help Britain's mental health helplines."

Holly continued: "Levels of loneliness and anxiety have soared in the pandemic, with rates of depression almost doubling during lockdown.

"Now statistics say one in five of us are likely to have recently experienced some form of depression."

Phil said he and Holly had chatted all the way through lockdown, which he admitted helped him "enormously".

The duo then encouraged viewers to call in if they need help.

"They are here for all of us," Phil said.
