This month is on track to be the wettest March ever.

We had the wettest February on record thanks to Storm Ciara, Dennis and Jorge, sparking widespread flooding and a number of Met Office weather warnings.

Areas of Scotland may have up to 4.64in of rainfall by March 24.

The UK average ­rainfall over 12 days is an estimated 2.52in.

Parts of Wales could have up to 3.74in of rain, with northern England on 3.62in.

Tonight more persistent rain pushed in from the west turning to snow on higher ground in the north, with a risk of gales in the south.

Tomorrow should be less windy with sunny intervals, along with outbreaks of rain in western and southern areas.

Cold winds are predicted to trigger sub-zero temperatures next week, bringing a risk of wintry conditions to some parts.

Brian Gaze, at Weather Outlook, warned of temperatures plunging to -5C in Scotland next week, with other areas of the UK at 0C.

He said: “Cold Arctic air will be pushing southwards on its eastern flank.

“That could keep the days chilly in eastern Britain but in the west, it should feel quite pleasant in the afternoon sunshine.”
