This is why there was a plume of black smoke over east Manchester

A caravan and a pile of tyres went up in flames in Gorton.

Firefighters were called to the blaze on allotments off Hyde Road, near to the Lord Nelson pub, at around 5pm on Saturday.

A large plume of smoke from the fire could be seen across Greater Manchester.

The fire is now out.

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said: "We were called to a fire in Hyde Road at 5pm this evening.

"It involved a caravan and a large quantity of tyres on allotment grounds.

"Two jets and a hose reel were used.

"The fire service will be leaving the scene shortly."
