This is why police swooped on Liverpool bank this morning

Police swooped on a bank in Liverpool city centre this morning.

A police van and patrol car pulled up outside the Virgin Money Store in Lord Street .

Police descended on the trendy bank - famed for its relaxed informal setting and comfy furnishings - after getting a call at 8.45am.

Officers could be seen surrounding the entrance to the bank and banging on the window as early morning shoppers looked on.

But today Merseyside Police said the dramatic call-out was as a result of human error rather than criminal activity.

A spokeswoman told the ECHO : "We were called at 8.45am but it proved a false alarm and everybody is safe. It appears someone pressed a button in error so we have stood down."
