This is why huge Atlas aircraft have been seen over Edinburgh and the Lothians today

The overcast weather in Edinburgh and the Lothians hasn't stopped some eagle-eyed locals from catching a glimpse of impressive RAF aircraft.

If you haven't spotted the army planes yet, you may still be in luck as they are set to be jetting over parts of Scotland throughout the day.

The planes are A400M Atlas aircraft and will be around Gatwick, Edinburgh Airport and Stornoway as part of "essential training".

One West Lothian resident, Richard Law, managed to snap a shot of the huge Atlas aircraft overhead in "a brief glimpse in between clouds".

In a statement on Twitter, a spokesperson for RAF Brize Norton said: “This am/pm our A400M Atlas aircraft will be operating in the vicinity of Gatwick, Edinburgh and Stornoway, whilst engaged in essential training

"These are necessary, routine, flights and not connected with RAF support to the UK's fight against coronavirus."
