This is who won the 2019 Nobel Peace Prize - and it's not Greta Thunberg

The 2019 Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded to Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.

The deciding committee said Mr Ahmed, 43, has been honoured for his efforts in resolving the border conflict with neighbouring Eritrea.

Teen climate activist Greta Thunberg had been the bookies' favourite to take home the award - but predictions made in the lead up to the announcement rarely turn out to be correct.

Berit Reiss-Andersen, chairwoman of the five-member Norwegian Nobel Institute that awards the prize, said the African prime minister has initiated important reforms that give many citizens in his country "hope for a better life and a brighter future".

Mr Ahmed said he was "humbled and thrilled" to have been honoured.

The 2019 award is the 100th Nobel Peace Prize and more than 300 candidates were put forward for it.

However, the committee does not reveal the names of nominees until 50 years have passed.

New Zealand prime minister Jacinda Ardern was also tipped to win this year. She was widely praised for her compassionate response to the Christchurch mosque shootings in March this year.

Previous winners of the prize include Nelson Mandela, Mother Teresa and Barack Obama.

The prize includes a gold medal and a cash prize of nine million Swedish krona, which is around £741,000.
