Austin mom Mads (@madsofischl) has gone viral on TikTok after going on a Hinge date. While the man in finance ticked all her boxes, he left her stunned with a text message after their outing.
What happened on this Hinge date?
In the clip, which has amassed 7,374 views, Mads began by explaining that she went on a date with a “really sweet” man in finance who, right from the start, knew she had kids. On the date, she says they had a “great time,” noting how they seemed to operate at the same “speed.”
That being said, Mads noted that there was “a little something in [her] gut” telling her that something was “off” about this man. She told viewers that he seemed to have a very socially active lifestyle. She questioned how she’d fit into such a lifestyle and was upfront with the man about this.
However, after she vocalised these fears, she received a text from the man saying that he didn’t “think through” getting to know someone with her level of “commitments.”
This made no sense to Mads, as she emphasized that she never hid the fact that she had kids.
“This is really discouraging,” she lamented. “Like, you know, I have kids, it literally says [on the Hinge profile] ‘has kids.’ So, if you’re gonna date a woman with kids, and you don’t understand what comes with that, ask questions. If it’s not for you, don’t waste my time.”
Mads didn’t immediately respond to The Mary Sue’s request for comment via TikTok comment and email.
@madsofischl One thing I despise more than anything is wasting my time. Reason # 10000000 why I enjoy being single. No one can mess with my time or my emotions. Thank you, next! #singlemomdatingproblems #momsoftiktok #hotmomdiaries #austintx #datinginaustin ♬ original sound – madsofischl
Comments were mixed
Some commenters urged Mads not to be discouraged, with one saying, “Good for you, girl good for you. Know your value.”
“The only type of guys you can legitimately date are those that already have kids,” another theorized. “99% of single dudes without kids, may want to date you for sex, but the more they think about the baggage they are out.”
Meanwhile, a third added that “something to consider is…the reason he gave for stepping back might not be the real reason he stepped back. He said it was about your level of commitments, but his real reason could be anything.”
Elsewhere, commenters took the man’s side, with a fourth user writing, “I hear what you’re saying, but it’s completely possible to like the idea of something, and then realize you’re in over your head. It was only one date, and you don’t know unless you try.”
A fifth user admitted, “I respect both sides. I think you opened the convo by also questioning your ability to invest. I think it was the right call for both.”
Has dating fell off?
Ultimately, being a single parent is hard. But dating as one is even harder. Given that less than one-third (31%) of single parents believe that their dates are “worth it,” it’s easy to see why one would get discouraged.
Still, it isn’t just single parents who have trouble with Hinge. TikToker Andrea (@ajdsing94) previously went viral after sharing how a person canceled their date after finding a “stronger connection” elsewhere. In the clip, she declared: “When I say I’m done dating, I’m done dating.”
